Brazilian lemonade has a longstanding presence as a delight in Brazil. People worldwide are now recognizing the refreshing qualities the drink and clamoring for more. Discover how to create this straightforward, thirst-quencher, ensuring you’re well-stocked for any summer occasion.
There’s little not to love about Brazilian lemonade. It’s a simple combination of lime (peel included), ice cubes, water, and sweetened condensed milk that comes together to make a sweet, tangy, and tart drink that’s arguably better than storebought plain ol’ lemonade.
Lemonade Without Lemons?
This is an interesting cultural quirk. The Brazilian Lemonade, despite being made with limes, likely gets its name from a language difference. In Portuguese, the word “limĂŁo” can be used to refer to both lemons and limes. In Brazil, what English speakers refer to as “limes” (green, smaller, and more acidic) are more common and are often referred to as “limĂŁo”.
On the other hand, what we call “lemons” in English (yellow and larger) are less common in Brazil and are often referred to as “limĂŁo siciliano”. So, when the recipe was translated into English, “limĂŁo” was translated as “lemon”, leading to the name Brazilian Lemonade, even though it’s made with what English speakers would identify as limes.
Variations Upon a Theme
One person wrote, “I’m Brazilian, and my dad used to do that at home a lot, to better results take the skin off.” Other folks claim that using only a little zest along with peeled limes is undoubtedly the way to go. Meanwhile, some have swapped out the sweetened condensed milk with sweetened coconut condensed milk for a delicious vegan version.

How to make Brazilian Lemonade
Brazilian Lemonade
Ingredients
- 4 large juicy limes
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 6 cups cold water
- 6 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
- Ice for serving
- Instructions:
Instructions
- Start by thoroughly washing the limes to remove any waxes or pesticides. Dry them and cut off the ends.
- Cut the limes into quarters. Don’t peel them—the peel gives the lemonade its unique flavor.
- In a blender, add the limes, sugar, and half the water. Blend until the limes are broken down, which should take about 30 seconds. Don’t blend too much or the drink can become bitter.
- Strain the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher, pressing with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
- Pour the rest of the water into the pitcher and mix well.
- Add the sweetened condensed milk to the pitcher and stir until fully incorporated.
- Serve your Brazilian Lemonade over ice for a refreshing drink.
